“Dad, I feel like I’m dying.”
Dean’d been doing wind sprints for what seemed like forever, lungs burning, sweat pouring off in waves, so figured now was an acceptable time to admit his pain.
“It’s just a cramp,” says John. “You’ve got ten more to do, move it.”
“It hurts. I can’t run anymore.”
John looks at his eldest. “Pretend a monster’s gonna get Sammy. What are you gonna do?”
Dean blanches, and runs, picturing razor-sharp teeth and claws ripping his little brother to shreds, all because of a measly stitch in his side.
The cramp vanishes, and never returns.
