Brief thoughts on 6.07

Went to my school’s hockey game last night (which was against our rivals, thusly I have no voice), ended up getting back to the dorm at about 3, and then watched the episode, because there was no way I was going to wait till after I woke up.
AND HOLY SHIT. I LOVED IT. IT WAS AMAZING.
I have to say, the writers are very clever for making Sam have no soul. Not just because it’s an intriguing concept in and of itself, but it at least delays the inevitable PTSD business, since, while Sam can remember the cage, he can’t actually feel it. I was so dreading they might rehash Dean’s admission, which I REALLY didn’t want, because that would both dilute the impact of both of them. So I’m glad they’re going this route.
Plus, you know, Robo Sam is...well...Jensen can sum up my feelings:

Not that Sam isn’t always like that, mind you, but...wow. Maybe it’s just because I love evil!Sam so I like this new, more detached version.
Dean...I haven’t really been a fan of since, erm, mid-season four, really. He’s had his moments, but for the most part he’s annoyed me. In this episode he kinda continued to do that. I mean, I get where he’s coming from, but seriously. He could lay off some. I particularly hated in the motel room scene where he’s talking about watching Sam’s every move and whatnot. THE GUY HAS NO SOUL, DEAN. A) he doesn’t actually care what you do because he literally can’t, and b) he can do whatever the hell he wants, given that he’s all supercharged now. “Control freak” is a rather apt way to put it, I think.
Although, you know, the motel room scene did cause Cas to give a whole new meaning to the word “fisting.” Yes, I did just say that. Bite me.
I’m kind of glad Gwen didn’t die in this. Which, up until this episode I would have slapped myself for saying, since the blond-haired Campbell (what was his name? Mark was it?) was the only decent one, I thought. But Gwen actually had a personality in this one, and I’m happy she might stick around for a bit. I’m happy Christian’s effectually dead, though, and Sampa can DIAF for all I care.
The twist at the end floored me. Usually there’s not much in SPN that surprises me, but I was SO caught off-guard by the reveal. Trippy.
Lastly, there was one moment in the episode that I loved more than anything, that really stuck with me. It was Sam’s face—actually more his eyes—after Crowley said “Or [...] I shove Sam right back in the hole.” You could see the utter horror in his face, even though he can’t feel.

It was way worse than Dean’s back in S4 when Cas said something similar, and it really gave an indication of how horrible the cage was. Sam may not have his soul, but he can still remember. Jared is just positively SPECTACULAR this season, he really is.
